Research Profile

Dr Say Hwa Tan is an Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA Fellow at Griffith University. Dr Tan joined Queensland Micro-and Nanotechnology Centre (QMNC) in Jan 2015 after obtaining his PhD from the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen/Max Planck Institute for Dynamic and Self-Organization, Germany, in September 2014.

In 2016, Dr Tan was highlighted as one of the 18 emerging investigators in the prestigious journal of lab on a chip. The journal highly commented his work on using an AC electric field to oscillate and deform micro-droplets. In 2014, Dr Tan was awarded the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor’s award for his PhD work on the microfluidic jukebox. The microfluidic jukebox allows for the first time, an acoustic interpretation of micro-droplets. Subsequently, he was also interviewed and featured in the Singapore state TV Mediacorp Focus program for his scientific achievements. In 2012, Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious Tan Kah Kee postgraduate award by the seventh President of Singapore Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam for his scientific achievements and social contributions.

Dr Tan has contributed substantial high quality scientific papers in international top refereed journals such as Lab on a Chip, Scientific Report, Biomicrofluidics, Langmuir, Microfluidics and Nanofluidics, and so on. He has published more than 40 research works in this area. His research has established and pioneered different approaches to manipulate droplets and bubbles using thermal, magnetic, acoustic and electric energy.

Dr Say Hwa Tan has joined the editorial board for MethodsX. A multidisciplinary open access journal from Elsevier which will publish the small but important customizations researchers make to their experiments. (link)
